About The Towers Family
Please sign in to see more.
The name Towers dates back to William de Tours who was part of the Norman Invasion of England in 1066. Further research failed to identify William as an individual but Martin de Tours was also known as William. As with most of the Norman knights he was given grants of lands seized from the defeated Saxons. Martin aka William was granted most of what is now Devon (Combe Martin being the site of his manor house) along with lands around Ely in Cambridgshire and the Furness area of Lancashire. My branch of the family, based on empirical evidence so far, stems from the area of the manor of Lowick in Lancashire. (Before county boundaries were changed when it became part of Cumbria).
The name Towers is widely dispersed along the east coast of England but concentrated in N. Lancs and Cumbria. The east coast spread may have been due to the family becoming Dissenters (later known as Quakers) and being forced to move to avoid persecution. In the 1800's my ancestors were blacksmiths in Neasham Co.Durham.

The name appears in the USA just after the Pilgrim Fathers and I am still working on that link. The Lancastrian branch remained in that area and the name is more common around Preston . According to Debretts, the family motto is "Deus Meus Turris" which translates as "God Is My Tower."
